Happy birthday to us: ServInt turns 16!
Ladies and gents, today is ServInt’s Sweet Sixteen!
It’s amazing to think how far this company has come. We’ve been through a lot, and we’ve seen our industry — as well as the Internet as a whole — change dramatically over the past decade and a half.
In just 16 years, the Internet has become the default way to do business. Even so, explaining the concept in plain English can be difficult. The Internet is, in a lot of ways, an incredibly abstract idea. It is quite literally everywhere all the time; that’s a paradigm that can be tough to condense in a sentence or two.
Last week, the video embedded below made the rounds across the Internet. It reminded me of how hard it can be — collectively I mean — to wrap our heads around an idea as vast as the Internet.
If for some reason you can’t see the embedded video, it’s essentially the cast of NBC’s Today Show circa 1994 chatting about how they have no idea what the Internet was. Of course, these are all intelligent people, but what makes this video so fun to watch is how ignorant (Note: I mean that literally, not pejoratively) they were of what would become such an essential part of our lives.
In 1994, ServInt was just an idea coalescing in a Richmond, VA dorm room. In 1995, it was a reality.
Back when most people’s experiences online had more to do with “AOL keywords” than moving their business to the web, ServInt was right there on the front lines. We’ve always believed that the best way to do business wasn’t to fit a customer into a product, but to build a solution that overcomes a problem. I’m proud to say we’ve done a pretty remarkable job on that front as we continue on in our teenaged years. 2010 was an exciting and critical year for us, and we promise that 2011 will be even more so.
So, in the spirit of getting older and wiser one year at a time, happy birthday to us. Thank you all for your business, your support, and your trust.
